Neurosonic in a psychiatric crisis unit: support for anxiety and relaxation

Treatment periods in a psychiatric crisis unit typically last one to three days. That is a short time. Yet staff have observed clear effects on anxiety and physical tension even within a brief stay.

Satasairaala's crisis unit introduced Neurosonic in autumn 2023 when moving into new facilities. Neurosonic Professional chairs were placed in calming rooms and Mobile mattresses are available in the sensory therapy room and in patients' own rooms.

An anxious mind is rarely at rest. Patients describe how Neurosonic empties the head: they sink into a state where the mind can rest, even just for a moment. Anxiety eases. No effort or learning is required.

"When the mobile mattress is in the patient's room, the patient can use it independently and start a program through their phone whenever it suits them best. That tells you it is very easy to use."

Carita Ohlsson, nurse, psychiatric crisis unit, Satasairaala

Feedback has been consistently positive. Almost every patient has wanted to use the device. The devices are in use daily and weekly. They do not gather dust in corners.

Neurosonic is a non-pharmacological support for nervous system regulation.
